Out of this world, or out of style? Students have thoughts about this year’s homecoming theme, and I have listened.
This year’s homecoming theme, Out of This World (AKA galaxy), is divisive, and students have strong opinions about it. I talked to some of them to find out what they think.
In response to asking people in my Spanish class, they say no bueno. “It is like last year’s yearbook furry all over again,” said one member. “I think it’s pretty basic.”
On a more positive note, math teacher Mr. Burress concisely remarked, “Pretty cool,” when asked about the theme. Teachers seem to really love it. One superfan, Ms. Richards, exclaimed “Sounds fun!”
The consensus is summed up by the inquisitive Callum Chace-Macki, “Very uncreative, but a fun theme, including Norman Tanner’s Star Wars costume. I’m going to get pants that are shiny and its going to be fun.”
Others think that there doesn’t need to be a theme. One critic says, “How about the theme is just get dressed up and dance?”
Fashion connoisseur Bryn Fleck said to wear: “Sparkly, blue, purple, shiny, silk, silver, black, and it’s got to be at least a little fancy,” another says, “I think a fun avenue to go down is space age and midcentury fashion.” I have just one piece of advice: don’t buy anything galaxy print to wear to this one dance; if you buy anything, go for something you will wear again or go with something vintage or second hand.
A great thing about the theme is you can make it anything you want it to be. It is very open to interpretation and there are many routes to go down.
Apart from clothing, students should expect to see more and more planets, purple, and purposeful paint splatters in the hallways and beyond. I just hope the dance lives up to the theme of being out of this world.
