This Wednesday, October 4th at 11:20am, the federal government will be testing its Emergency Alert System. Why does this matter to you?
Because every single student’s phone will start beeping five minutes into 3rd period.
What is the test?
In very very short terms, the federal government has this emergency alert system that sends a message to everyone’s phones, TVs, and radios. This Wednesday, they’re doing a nation-wide test. If you want to know more, here's Marques Brownlee's TikTok about it.
Why is it silly?
You can’t mute it (I don’t think?). Just like for AMBER Alerts, regardless of how muted you think your phone is, it will play “a unique tone and vibration that is meant to make the alert accessible to the entire public, including people with disabilities” (FEMA).
Remind me when it is?
Wednesday October 4th at 11:20am PST. That’s five minutes after 3rd period starts.
What if it doesn’t beep?
Ok so admittedly there’s a chance it doesn’t make everyone’s phone beep. That would be sad but also funny. I’m crossing my fingers tho…
